Early Voting Poll Worker

What does someone in this position do?
Early Voting Poll Workers serve for an extended 8 to 12 day period (minus state holidays) at one of the Early Voting Locations. Poll Workers will check in voters and provide assistance with voting equipment as needed. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

Election Day Poll Worker

What does someone in this position do?
Election Day Poll Workers have duties similar to those of Early Voting Poll Workers but condensed to one day. Working on Election Day is long and often intense but rewarding. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Organizing and preparing the voting site prior to opening the polls;
  • Ensuring that qualified voters are permitted to vote;
  • Checking in and processing voters;
  • Distributing ballots to registered voters;
  • Providing instructions and assistance to voters;
  • Maintaining order at the voting site during voting hours;
  • If serving during Early Voting, be available to work different lengths of time and at different hours during the election cycle. Shifts can vary from 8 to 12 hours each day;
  • If serving on Election Day, be available to work from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m.;
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not required; and
  • Assist with closing procedures after the polls close.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older and a registered voter in El Paso County;
  • Be familiar with computers;
  • Not hold an elected office nor be an employee of an elected official;
  • Be able to take direction well and not be easily distracted;
  • Enjoy interactions with people;
  • Have dependable transportation to the assigned voting site;
  • Be able to lift and carry at least 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time;
  • Enjoy interactions with people; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

This applies ONLY to an Early Voting Judge, Presiding Judge or Alternate Judge:
Election Judges, are public officials and public officers. Pursuant to the Texas Government Code, Chapter 573, public officers are prohibited from appointing family members within the first, second and third degrees by consanguinity or affinity to positions directly compensated from public funds.

What are Student Election Clerks?
High school students who are 16 years of age or older now have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process by serving as Student Election Clerks at any voting site during Early Voting or on Election Day. A high school student who is at least 16 years of age and who is enrolled in a public or private high school or home school and has the consent of the Principal (or parent/legal guardian in charge of education in home school) may serve as a Student Election Clerk. Our office must receive written authorization from the student’s parent or guardian in order to serve in the election for which he or she is appointed. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

This program is designed to provide students with a greater awareness of the electoral process and the rights and responsibilities of voters. The students will assist their local election officials by filling positions at voting sites during Early Voting or on Election Day and working under the direction of the Early Voting Judge or Presiding Judge.

What are the benefits of serving as a Student Election Clerk?
Some of the benefits of serving as a Student Election Clerk are:

Working under the supervision of the Presiding Judge, Student Election Clerks may assist with the following duties:

  • Organizing the voting site before the polls open;
  • Ensuring that qualified voters are permitted to vote;
  • Checking in and processing voters;
  • Distributing ballots to registered voters;
  • Providing instructions and assistance to voters;
  • Explaining the use of the voting equipment;
  • Maintaining order in the polling place during Early Voting or on Election Day;
  • Assisting with closing procedures after the polls close.

To be qualified, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old on Election Day;
  • Be enrolled in a public, private, or qualified home school;
  • Be a U.S. Citizen;
  • Have consent of your parent or legal guardian to work the election;
  • Have consent of your school Principal (or parent/legal guardian for home-schooled students), and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

How to Apply

  • Complete the Student Election Clerk Application and Permission Form.
  • Have your parent or guardian sign the parent/legal guardian permission portion.
  • Have your school Principal sign the school Principal authorization portion. Also, take the proper steps to ensure that your absence from school in order to work during Early Voting or on Election Day will be excused.

  • By email to epelections@epcounty.com. In the email title include “Your full name - Student Election Clerk Application and Permission Form” and include your completed application as an attachment.

  • Try to send application at least 60 days prior to Election Day (even though there is no statutory deadline).

  • If selected, attend the required Poll Worker training prior to serving as a Student Election Clerk. This training provides all the necessary information and knowledge to be a successful Student Election Clerk.

Important Notes:

  • The Elections Administrator will provide each judge with a list of all eligible Student Election Clerks.
  • A school district may excuse a student for the purpose of serving as an Early Voting and/or Election Day Student Election Clerk for a maximum of two days in a school year. (Example: A student could work two weekdays during Early Voting for an election held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, and then also work on Election Day, as the student would only have to be excused from school for two days).
  • Up to four Student Election Clerks may work at a single Early Voting Location at a time, and up to two Student Election Clerks may work at an Election Day Vote Center at a time.

Remember…When you turn 18, you will have reached the age to serve as a regular Poll Worker!

These diligent workers assist in processing voter registration applications. They assist with data entry of voter information and prepare election materials for mailing. They accept, process, and sort all incoming mail as well as prepare and process the necessary paperwork related to official election mail. This position is temporary/seasonal. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Be familiar with computers;
  • Have elections experience but not required;
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Possess the ability to organize and alphabetize;
  • Have experience in mailroom and inventory control;
  • Have excellent customer service skills; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

What does someone in this position do?
These diligent workers assist in the preparation, processing, and qualification of ballot by mail applications. They assist with data entry of information of qualified applicants and prepare election materials and ballots for mailing. They accept, process, and sort all incoming mail as well as prepare and process the necessary paperwork related to official election mail. This position is temporary/seasonal. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Be familiar with computers;
  • Have elections experience but not required;
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Possess the ability to organize and alphabetize;
  • Have experience in mailroom and inventory control;
  • Have excellent customer service skills; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

What does someone in this position do?
These informative and friendly workers answer inbound calls from the public and Poll Workers. They provide information about voter eligibility, assist Poll Workers with voting procedures and help voters locate voting sites. They also route calls to appropriate elections department staff, identify and expedite priority issues and track the nature of their calls. This position is temporary and available only during an election cycle. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Be familiar with computers;
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Have elections experience but not required;
  • Provide voting system technical support and troubleshooting;
  • Have experience in customer service, call center or dispatcher;
  • Have excellent customer service skills;
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not required; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

What does someone in this position do?
An Election District Supervisor, also known as a Rover, will assist assigned voting sites during Early Voting or on Election Day. Rovers will assist with voting system technical support and troubleshooting, delivery, voting site set-up, and maintenance of all electronic voting equipment. This position is part of a rapid response team assigned to support voting sites on-site and replenish supplies. This position is temporary and available only during an election cycle. The current pay is $18.00 per hour. During Early Voting: An additional $20.00 per day is included for pick-up and delivery of election supplies. Election Day: An additional $35.00 is included for pick-up and delivery of election supplies.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Have a valid Texas Driver’s License, and a good driving record is required;
  • Drive their own personal vehicle;
  • Have experience with computers and mobile devices is required;
  • Be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. and stand for long periods of time;
  • Be able to report to assigned voting site by 6:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 p.m.;
  • Have excellent customer service skills;
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not required;
  • If serving during Early Voting, be available to work different lengths of time and at different hours during the election cycle;
  • If serving on Election Day, be available 12-14 hours or as directed by the authority conducting the election; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

What does someone in this position do?
An Election Night Receiving Worker will assist the Elections Department staff with receiving voting equipment and election supplies from all voting sites. This position will receive voting equipment, election documents, balloting materials, and election supplies that Poll Workers return after the polls have closed. This position is temporary and available only during an election cycle. The current pay is $15.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 16 years or older;
  • Be 18 years or older and a registered voter in El Paso County if assigned to handle balloting materials;
  • Be able to report to assigned facility by 6:00 p.m. on election night until approximately 12:00 a.m.;
  • Be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. and stand for long periods of time;
  • Be able to move at a fast pace as the work can be physically demanding;
  • Be able to work under pressure;
  • Experience with computers, mobile devices and apps preferred but not required;
  • Possess the ability to organize and alphabetize;
  • Enjoy interactions with people; and
  • Attend a mandatory training provided by the El Paso County Elections Department.

What does someone in this position do?
The Box Truck Driver is responsible for loading, unloading, and driving 24-26 ft. box trucks with lift gates to voting sites for delivery and pickup of election equipment. This position is temporary and available only during an election cycle. The pay is $15.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Have a valid Texas Driver’s License, and good driving record is required;
  • Have experience with loading and unloading using lift gate systems;
  • Be available for 3-4 weeks during an election cycle, averaging up to 40 hours per week with possible overtime; and
  • Pass a criminal background check and driving record check.

What does someone in this position do?
Assists in general instruction of elections curriculum and training materials. This position is temporary and available only during an election cycle. The current pay is $18.00 per hour.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

  • Be 18 years or older;
  • Have dependable transportation to and from training facility;
  • Be available to work full time hours, variable schedules, split shifts, including evenings and weekends;
  • Have excellent public speaking skills;
  • Computer skills and written communication skills are required;
  • Enjoy interactions with people;
  • Be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. repeatedly and stand for long periods of time; and
  • Have experience in elections process, teaching, or training.
