Poll Worker & Poll Watcher

Become a Poll Worker!

El Paso County is looking for Presiding Judges & Election Clerks also known as Poll Workers. As explained below, these positions are temporary and available only during an election cycle.

Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Qualifying the voter;
2. Assisting voters with voting process;
3. Assisting and/or managing the opening and closing of the election polls;
4. Be available to work on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m.

To be qualified, at a minimum you must:

1. Be 18 years or older and a registered voter for El Paso County;
2. Be familiar with computers;
3. Not hold an elected office nor be an employee of an elected official;
4. Be able to take direction well and not be easily distracted;
5. Enjoy interactions with people;
6. Have dependable transportation to the election polls;
7. Be able to lift and carry at least 30 lbs. and stand for long periods of time;
8. Be able to report to assigned poll by 6:00 a.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m.;
9. Be available 12-14 hours on Election Day, or as directed by the authority conducting the election;
10. Be available to work different lengths of time and at different hours during the election cycle.

For Presiding Judge Position Only: Presiding Judges, are public officials and public officers. Pursuant to the Texas Government Code, Chapter 573, public officers are prohibited from appointing family members within the first, second and third degrees by consanguinity or affinity to positions directly compensated from public funds.

I’m interested in becoming a Presiding Judge or Alternate Judge. What do I do?

Prospective Election Judges are also encouraged to contact one of the two political parties in El Paso County for possible nomination to work as a Presiding Judge or Alternate Judge. Nominations are made in June of each year, so please contact the political party of your choice. Contact information is listed below:

Poll Watcher

A Poll Watcher is a person appointed to observe the conduct of an election on behalf of a candidate, a political party or the proponents or opponents of a measure (specific-purpose political action committees).

A Poll Watcher’s role in a election is established by Chapter 33 of the Texas Election Code. The Texas Secretary of State provides a Poll Watcher’s Guide for elections.
